Nick Carraway is the narrator of The Great Gatsby. Nick has a special role in the story because he is both an "insider" and an "outsider." He is a witness to the events of the novel, but because he is not really a part of Gatsby's world, he maintains a certain detachment from it. Nick actually has to work for a living, and does not have the kind of wealth that Gatsby and the Buchanans have. He is also the product of a common-sense midwestern upbringing and is thus "inclined to reserve all judgments" about people. Because of Nick's lack of criticism, the reader is at a greater liberty to make his/her own judgments about the morality of the other characters.
