   Moody was active in civil rights as an adult. What really makes an impact on the reader is that instead of writing about her time fighting for the civil rights movement, she told her story from the perspective of growing up poor and black.

   By focusing on this aspect, she was able to relate why the civil rights movement was necessary, and gave a vivid picture of the inequities within our social system. Her novel impacted all economic and social levels.
